Killed at the Battle of Loos on the 25th September 1915

Major Emslie Tosh – in command of Companies of the Black Watch. One of Dundee’s most ardent civilian soldiers – as an officer of the 1 V.B.R.H. he worked with enthusiastic zeal on behalf of the volunteer movement. When the call came for trained men for service in South Africa the then Lieutenant Tosh was one of the first to respond. He had served in the Natal Mounted Police – Selected to command a draft for the 1st Volunteer Company attached to the Black Watch he soon proved his abilities as a leader. Awarded the South African Medal with clasps for Cape Colony & Orange Free State & Transvaal. He was made honorary burgess of the City of Dundee.

On the formation of the Territorial Force he became an active officer, rendering valuable service to the movement in this part of Scotland. He had the confidence and esteem of his fellow officers and men. He was a Chartered Accountant in Dundee and a staunch supporter and believer in the vital importance of preparations for national defence.
